5 things I'm already looking forward to in 2018

In some ways it’s hard to believe 2017 is nearly over and in other ways 2017 feels like it has dragged out for much longer than 12 months. Remember this time last year when everyone couldn’t wait for 2017 to come around so we could leave the horror that 2016 was behind us? “What could be worse than all the
celebrity deaths of 2016!” we proclaimed. Oh, how young and naïve we were back then.

But hey, 2017 is nearly (finally) over. It’s been a very up and down year for me, as I sort of mentioned a few blog posts ago when I wrote about getting offered a new job. Overall, 2017 has definitely been one of my least favourite years so far but it has had some redeeming moments. I’ve had lovely weekends in Munich, Norwich and London; I went to my very first Pride, I volunteered, I made new friends, I finally started this blog and of course I can’t forget the saving grace of the whole year: I finally found a full time job.

Reminiscing on the experiences I’ve enjoyed over the last year made me look towards 2018 and what I can already look forward to. I’m naturally quite a cynical person and I always have been but I’m trying to make an effort to look for the positives instead.

So, in no particular order, here is my list of five things I’m looking forward to in 2018:

1. Visiting Shanghai

One of my best friends is moving to Shanghai next month to teach English so what better excuse than to book a trip to China in 2018? I went to Thailand when I was 9 and it was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had and I’ve wanted to see more of Asia ever since. Vietnam has always been one of the top places I’ve wanted to visit and so I might look into extending my trip so that I can spend some time in Hanoi too. I haven’t even started planning anything yet but I’m so excited to have this to look forward to and even the thought of all that travelling on my own isn’t putting me off.

2. My Favorite Murder Live

Some of you might know I’m a fan of the My Favorite Murder podcast if you read my post on the best podcasts to improve your commute. I used to be really fascinated with true crime when I was younger and I can’t really remember why this stopped other than thinking it was a bit of a morbid topic to have much of an interest in. But that’s where My Favorite Murder comes in. The podcast talks about true crime sensitively but with a touch of humour that never falls in the category of disrespecting the victims, but with just the right amount of light heartedness to make these horrible topics digestible. It’s a very chatty podcast and their honest discussions about topics like mental health, therapy and the direction your life may take have been so comforting to me this year.
They recently announced UK dates for their live shows which I was desperate to get tickets for and thanks to an administrative mess up when the general sale tickets went on sale, I ended up impulsively dropping quite a lot of money on a VIP ticket rather than miss out. I felt guilty about this for a while but I’m so glad I did it, you have to treat yourself every now and again and I really do think I deserve this one! This also means that I will actually get to meet Karen and Georgia, which is both an exciting prospect and also incredibly intimidating. Their podcast has done so much for me this year that I would struggle to even explain in writing and I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to meet these amazing women in 2018.

3. Getting a cat

Cats are one of my favourite things in the whole entire world. I love their little faces, I love their paws, I love the hairless ones, I love the fluffy ones; I love them all. And I am FINALLY going to have my own. I’ve wanted my own cat for as long as I can remember but it just hasn’t been realistic before now. I was out of the house for long hours which wouldn’t be fair on an animal and I was also only working part time so I wasn’t sure I would even be able to afford one. Luckily, I’ve now found myself in the position where my hours have changed and I’ve found a full time job so I know I’ll be able to afford everything that comes with owning a cat. I really wanted to get one before Christmas but I’ve been so busy and my Christmas plans were a bit up in the air for a while so it hasn’t ended up happening. It’s my number one priority in 2018 and I’m so excited to have a fluffy addition to the household.

4. Starting a new job

This is one I’ve already gone on about quite a lot; I even wrote a blog post about it, so I will keep this point relatively short. Starting a new job means I’ll have regular hours, I’ll no longer be working by myself, it’s so much more up my street in terms of what I enjoy doing and I have every weekend off. That last thing definitely hasn’t sunk in after being so used to being stuck in retail. I am so much more productive and my general mental health is so much better when I have a good routine and that’s something I can’t wait to get into when I start in January. I’m really optimistic that it will tie a lot of other things together and I’ll have more time to do things I enjoy, like updating this blog, cooking and (maybe) even joining a gym.

5. A January wedding

And one thing that I have to look forward to very soon is that I’ve been invited to my friend's wedding which is on the first Saturday in January. I’ve only ever been to two family weddings before and I’m so excited that this time it's one of my friends and I get to see her in her dress and help her celebrate the big day! I love everything wedding related on TV, from Say Yes to the Dress to Don't Tell the Bride and Four Weddings (Cheapest Weddings on Netflix is my latest binge and I can 100% recommend it) and I can't wait to actually be at one for once instead of just watching it on a screen. We’ve bought the wedding present, now the last thing to do is secure an outfit and I’m hoping the Boxing Day sales will be kind to me on that front so keep your fingers crossed.

So that’s my quick roundup of the things I already have to look forward to next year. I’m really hoping that 2018 will be a good one, surely anything has to be better than 2017 right?

What are you looking forward to next year?
